Obeya (Oobeya), or ” Big Room” in Japanese, is a workspace where teams gather to collaborate and coordinate. The walls of Obeyas are traditionally covered with paper boards, notes, sticky notes, and other materialization of the collective intelligence that emerges in this place.
The obeya strategy wall has proven me to be a valuable tool to aligning (management) and bringing structure and focus to both activities and decisions. The wall works great in a physical setting with post it notes but can also work fine in a virtual miro board.
The obeya strategy wall is one of agilewalls variants of the obeya concept where you get an instant overview of a companies business architecture. It consists of the following areas:
- Purpose, Mission & Vision
- Clear, concisely formulated Objectives
- Measureable key results from those objectives
- health metrics: metrics we need to keep in check while achieving these objectives
- priorities: a roadmap for projects and deliverables that contribute to the objectives
