The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change by Stephen R. Covey

history

  • In [2011] I started my personal development journey with this book, it was recommended to me by my then coach. I loved the practicality of it, and combined with the Tony Robbins Get the edge tapes got me started into changing my life around
  • in [2012] i reread the book, every time i reread i find new places where I can apply the theory
  • in [2023] i heard a podcast reviewing the seven habits and had to agree with them that the all the examples are made up and would never have occurred in real life. i also agree that the book could have been condensed to a very short book that would be a lot better overviewable.

takeaways

  • when i recommend this book i usually point to very specific points, mostly explaining the theory behind certain aspects:
    • paradigm shift
    • circle of concern, circle of influence and circle of control
    • (bad) shift from character ethic to personality ethic
  • the seven habits themselves:
    1. Be Proactive
    2. Begin With the End in Mind
    3. Put First Things First
    4. Think Win-Win
    5. Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
    6. Synergize
    7. Sharpen the Saw
  • P/PC principle
  • Each of us guards a gate of change that can only be opened from the inside.
