Albert-Jan Talsma 15:39 reply reply What about Monero - Bitcoin atom swaps that have been introduced recently. That would pose an issue for your service in terms of pseudonimity/anonymity right? Erik Maranus 15:40 Not anonymous…but what about chain swapping? In a chain swap, the criminal transfers the bitcoin to a shady offshore cryptocurrency exchange. These exchanges are notoriously weak about enforcing money laundering laws and — for the most part — don’t have access to the banking system. Once on this alternate exchange, the criminal sells his bitcoin and buys some other cryptocurrency like Ethereum, Dogecoin, Tether, Monero, or one of dozens of others. They then transfer it to another shady offshore exchange and transfer it back into bitcoin. Thomas de Zoete 15:41 Thanks for your question Albert-Jan. While some illicit actors including ransomware groups use privacy coins in an attempt to obfuscate their transactions, they haven’t been adopted to the extent that one may expect. One reason is they aren’t as liquid as Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Especially now that many exchanges have delisted privacy coins given regulatory guidance, they’re becoming increasingly “impractical”. Thomas de Zoete 15:43 Good comment Erik. Chain swapping is indeed a technique used by illicit actors to obfuscate their belongings. As long as those illicit actors are using public blockchains (like BTC, or ETH, or any ERC20 token), there is a immutable record of it available on the blockchain. Forever. That we can analyze 😉 But it’s not always easy to track, if that is what you mean!
