FULL CYCLE: by Polygon Live & THE OTHER SIDE
Bayaat (NL) / Christian Löffler (DE) / Stimming (DE)
Quite excited to hear both Loffler and Stimming adjusted their live sets to perform on the Polygon spatial audio system “powered by L-Acoustics’ L-ISA processor”. I heard about this tech at ADE last year and was really curious to hear it in action, especially in combination with Stimming’s dawless setup.
It was a shame I missed Bayaat at the start, the event started very early which I think is actually great and I was pleased to see the room was still booked full and well attended.
The spatiality of the system was impressive and most noticable during builds leading up to the drops, mostly leaning heavily on panning type effects swooshing around the room was a nice novelty effect.
The speaker system was a bit muddy in the lows and made it hard to separate the kick from the bass and deep toms every now and then, further exacerbated by the only slightly mastered sound from the live gear, but that was of course to be expected and in line with the expectations.
What I didn’t like was the constant and invasive videography in the front of the venue. I know I implicitly agree with being filmed by attending the venue, but in this particular event it was very annoying and distracting from the experience.
I was also quite surprised Stimming wasn’t playing last, I liked hearing some familiar tunes in the start of Löfflers set but the setup was barely live, fully scripted Ableton playthrough save for a couple of added drum notes. Also christian didn’t really seem to be enjoying himself that much, which didn’t make me feel that bad for leaving early.
Stimming played a whole lot from the elderberry album, I loved a couple of throwbacks to older songs and liked the live elements from the S1. Solid grooves and smooth transitions. Can only cheer on for more live performance events in future editions of ADE!
